Braud - Les Vignes du Bourg - Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie 2020
A great wine that we got to know through an article about Muscadet in Noble Rot, the wine magazine. It listed 5 Muscadets you have to try, 4 of which we knew as big names and wines we loved and then one Les Vignes du Bourg by a winemaker we had never heard of. Braud, who's that?
Turns out Julien Braud is a young winemaker who started his (now)7,8ha domaine in Muscadet in 2012. He works organically, ploughs by horse and implements biodynamic influences in his viticulture. In the cellar he's hands off, often not filtering his wines yet he's not after creating funky, crazy wines. He is firmly rooted in tradition and creates mineral driven, super elegant wines with substance.
This wine is aged on the lees for six months, bottled in the March following the harvest and is lightly filtered. It's an ethereal expression of how good Muscadet can be. With one big secret as well: these wines can age. This is probably the best €14 you can spend on a white wine that is age worthy and the perfect companion for oysters!
It's the second wine of the domaine, with the entry level being the popular Préface.
