Esteve i Gibert - Clot dels Eixams Malvasia 2019
A Catalan surprise! One of our favorite wines on the 2022 Vi.No.So wine fair in Amsterdam. Plus the winemaker is an awesome guy with whom we spent a night of barbecue and unicorn wines.
The wine is made from the Catalan grape variety Malvasia de Sitges, a local clone of the Malvasia grape. As Woldevins, their importer puts it:
This delicious white wine is made by fermenting the grapes after a cold maceration in chestnut wood barrels of 500 liters and after this the wine remains in the barrel for another 8 months before it goes into the bottle. This maturation provides freshness and complexity. Where oak gives off some flavour, chestnut mainly provides more oxygen contact.
This golden yellow wine has a warm, ripe nose with lots of stone fruit and spices. In the mouth, the body is quite full, but not overwhelming. A wine where you discover something new with every sip. Ripe, voluptuous, elegant, warm... Delicious!
For people that know and love the wines by Jean-Pierre Robinot, this is like their Catalan nephew, try it!
