Oller del Mas - Els Merlets 2021

Recently winemaker Carles Muray of Catalan winery Oller del Mas visited the shop for an event and the crowd's reaction was unanimous: the Els Merlets is a delicious wine! 

Made from Sumoll, a true Catalan grape variety that is unique in its flavors + everything we like in a light red. Perhaps most similar to a crossing of Gamay and Trousseau, but with a distinctly unique character. This wine turned our view of Spanish wines upside down, being crystal clear, very light in color and only 11,5% alcohol - can Spain produce cold climate wines like these? Apparently under the influence of the cold winds of the Pyrenees it can! 

A lightly colored wine with a smell of dried raspberries, ripe strawberries and a saline and fresh minerality, followed by a palate with fresh acidity, a clear minerality and that same crunchy, cherry fruit. Highly recommended! Only a small number of bottles are made each year, most of them are sold in Catalonia itself. Zero sulfur.
