Juanjo Tellaetxe - Tantaka Blanco 'Ondarrabi Zuri' 2019
It's dangerous writing a description while drinking the actual wine, but this is truly something special. Made from Hondarabbi Zuri, the local grape variety of the Spanish Basque country. The vineyards here are quite close to the Atlantic ocean, so salt sprays regularly hit the vines.
The Tantaka winery in Spain's Basque Country is, with its birth year of 2017, very young. But by no means inexperienced, since the family of founder Juanjo Tellatetxe also made wine 80 years ago using only indigenous grape varieties. Indeed, that is Juanjo's ambition: to make the best wine based on Ondarrabi varieties.
This wine is very special: high in acidity, high in salinity, a beautiful richness and beautiful complexity. Lovers of Riesling, take a dip into the salty Atlantic coast. Lovers of the Jura's Savagnin wines, this has at least the same tension and nerve. Try it.
Spontaneously fermented in stainless steel, 5 months on the lees, bottled unfiltered with minimal sulfur.
