Vin Noé - Face to Face Viognier 2019
Vin Noé is a project by the young Californian winemaker Jonathan Purcell in Burgundy. He started this micro-domaine after graduating his viticultural studies in Beaune. He has established Vin Noé in 2016 after working for the legendary Philippe Pacelet. He is based in an old cuverie and produces wines from purchased grapes and some leased vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet and Saint Aubin.
The Vin Noé wines are zero intervention wines: wild fermented, no temperature control, zero sulfur additions and no filtration.
While only about 1% of all grapes grown in Beaujolais are white, the majority are either Chardonnay or Aligoté. Yet here we have a 100% Viognier, left on skins for 2 weeks, a unicorn wine from a winemaker who seems to be at one with this magical animal.
Viognier makes excellent Orange/Amber wines, from the honeyed stone fruit and spice complexity of the varietal, to its broad waxy body and texture, all these elements are enhanced by time on skin, and given a coat of tannin which integrates and envelops it nicely.
Very, very rare. If you want to have the opportunity to taste this wine, this is your shot.
