Matthieu Barret - Petit Ours Rouge Syrah 2022
Syrah | a plot of 5 ha on a cool north slope from Côtes du Rhône Visan | picked early, looking for freshness, fermentation and aging for 6 months on concrete, minimal sulfur: pure, fresh, graphite, aniseed, soft, cassis, juicy.
The good-humored Matthieu is just under 1.70, fairly round and has a nice beard (hence the name the little bear, Petit Ours). His grandfather owns more than 11 ha of steep terrace vineyards in Cornas (out of a total of 120 ha). He decides not to sell the grapes but to start making his own wines (age 23 in 1998).
He does not follow the path of the 'classic' producers but tries to influence the wine as minimally as possible and scales back the use of oak to a minimum. The new cellar relocated in 2018 is full of concrete cuvées. His wines are intriguing and very pure, with depth and are stylistic. In addition to the Cornas series of wines, there is his negocé range with wines such as Petit Ours, Black Flack, No wines land.
