Philip Lardot - Der Hirt 2021
Philip Lardot is both a dear friend and a very talented vigneron, working his magic on the steep slopes of the Mosel. Der Hirt is coming from a very steep, very old (planted before 1944) vineyard in Valwig, called Der Valwiger Herrenberg, about 30 minutes from the cellar in Bullay. This vineyard is unfortunately now uprooted, 2021 will be the last vintage for this vineyard. We suggest buying bottles and putting them away, because they age so gracefully.
Because of the Southern exposure and the soil type, these wines are his richest Rieslings. Not necessarily in alcohol levels but mouth feel. Rich, complex, very deep flavors and minerality. Long barrel aging (over 2 years), allowing malolactic fermentation and skipping the step of filtration has lowered the alcohol levels, which turns out to be very befitting for these Mosel rieslings.
